DAR Day of Service 2024

Colonel Thomas Dorsey Chapter Welcomes Marquis de Lafayette to Fort McHenry on Oct. 7, 2024 during the Bicentennial celebration of his Farewell Tour.

The Marquis de Lafayette, center (reenacted by Mark Schneider), arrives at Fort McHenry Oct. 7 in a parade led by the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, 3rd Infantry, and reenactors of the War of 1812.

Colonel Thomas Dorsey Chapter members, seen here with three members of the Maryland Society, Sons of the American Revolution color guard, volunteered at the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette's Farewell Tour Oct. 7 at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, and even organized by the American Friends of Lafayette.

Colonel Thomas Dorsey Chapter members joined family and friends at the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette's Farewell Tour at Fort McHenry Oct. 7.

Chapter members made and presented a Quilt of Valor to our Honorary Regent's husband on Aug. 24, 2024.

Cemetery Cleanup on Sept. 30, 2023 at the Fuller/Kane/Smith family cemetery in Ellicott City.

Eleven gravestones were cleaned, two foot stones and one gravestone foundation. Daughters who volunteered raked, weed-whacked, removed low tree limbs and the ivy wound in and over the chain-link fence.

More masks! One chapter member was taught to sew during the pandemic this summer by her 94-year-old mother. She then created scrub caps for her daughter, a nursing student working at Howard County General Hospital, and for nurses at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. She also mailed 29 masks to the Yakama Indian National Reservation in Harrah, Washington.

Our Chapter found a way to support veterans during the quarantine mandated during the COVID-19 pandemic. We participated in a parade of vehicles April 25 honoring a local veteran, Gerald Greenfield, Lt. Col. (retired), who was celebrating his 100th birthday. We joined active duty military personnel, members of the American Legion, fraternity brothers from Omega Psi Phi in their purple and gold jackets and neighbors and friends, all wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Our vehicles snaked around Mr. Greenfield’s Columbia neighborhood as we honked, waved and showed our handmade signs wishing him a happy birthday.

Chapter members collaborated in sewing fabric masks in April 2020 for family members visiting loved ones in a local hospice as well as essential employees of other local care-giving facilities. This vintage DAR paperweight came in handy holding patterns and fabric in place.
